The following bursaries are available to postgraduate students registering for a degree at the Institute of English Studies:

SAS and AHRC studentships

The School has been awarded a number of Block Grant awards from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and has two full bursaries for doctoral study to award to students registered at one of the Institutes. Further information.

Institute of English Studies Bursaries
Overseas (non-EU) Students (MA and MPhil/PhD)

The Institute offers one bursary of £1,000 per year for each of the following courses of full-time study (the bursary is pro-rated for part-time study).  Application is invited from Overseas (non-EU) students only, and may be made as part of their specific course application.

The bursaries are decided by competition on the basis of submitted written work as follows:

  • An essay on an appropriate subject (e.g. a piece of final year undergraduate coursework, of no less than 1000 and no more than 3000 words), for MA students
  • An element of MA degree coursework, for MPhil/PhD students

These items should be submitted to the Institute by 14 August prior to the commencement of the intended course of study.  Allocation of bursaries will be decided by 20 September.
