Continuation of the Institute of English Studies agreed

Thursday 29 January 2015

The Board of Trustees of the University of London yesterday approved the School of Advanced Study’s sustainability plan, which includes the continuation of the Institute of English Studies in its current form.  We are naturally delighted with this decision which ends a difficult period of uncertainty. It endorses the essential work that the Institute undertakes in enhancing innovative research in English, one of the largest disciplines in the Humanities.

Professor Dinah Birch, pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Liverpool and Chair of the Institute’s Advisory Council, commented: “I am truly delighted to hear of the University’s decision to continue its support for the work of the Institute of English Studies. We look forward to developing the Institute’s lively programme of activities, as it takes forward its vital role in supporting the diverse and creative disciplines of English.”

Dr Wim Van Mierlo, Acting Director of the Institute, said: “I am enormously pleased with the news. Once again I want to thank the entire subject community for the support and encouragement it has given to the Institute during these testing times.”
