The Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of the new Chair of its Advisory Council. Professor Dinah Birch, FEA is Professor of English at the University of Liverpool and a leading authority on Victorian literature.  She is the author of Our Victorian Education (2008) and general editor of The Oxford Companion to English Literature (2009), as well as the editor of works by John Ruskin, Elizabeth Gaskell, George Eliot and Anthony Trollope. A former head of department, she is currently Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Liverpool, as well as Chair of the English Language and Literature and Deputy Chair for Arts and Humanities on REF2014. Her work in research strategy and policy has contributed to defining and enhancing the University of Liverpool’s research performance (in relation to research income and the REF) and has led the development and implementation of, among others, Knowledge Exchange strategies. She is also a member of the AHRC Peer Review College and former member of the IES Advisory Council (2005-9).  Professor Birch will bring a vast amount of experience to her role as Chair, as well as a deep understanding of the needs and concerns of the English subject community.  We are delighted that Professor Birch has joined us in this capacity to advise and steer the Institute during a difficult period.
