We are delighted to announce that this year’s annual International Vernon Lee Society Lecture will be given by Dustin Friedman, and is entitled “‘Sinister Exile’: Queer Myth and Aesthetic Teleology in Walter Pater and Vernon Lee.”

Dustin Friedman is Assistant Professor in the Department of Literature at American University in Washington, DC. His research and teaching focuses on Victorian literature and culture, with emphases on aestheticism and Decadence, as well as gender and sexuality studies. His book, Before Queer Theory: Victorian Aestheticism and the Self was published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 2019, and his writings have appeared in theJournal of Modern LiteratureELHStudies in RomanticismLiterature Compass, and Studies in Walter Pater and Aestheticism.

The event will be hosted on Zoom and will begin at 18:30 with a welcome from IVLS President Professor Sophie Geoffroy (Université de La Réunion) and will be chaired by Dr Sally Blackburn-Daniels (The Open University). Non-members are warmly welcomed.

IVLS: The International Vernon Lee Society was founded by Professor Sophie Geoffroy (Université de la Réunion) in 2007 to promote the life and works of Vernon Lee (Violet Paget, 1856-1935) and her circle. The Society and its online journal The Sibyl echo the multidisciplinary and collaborative nature of the work of Vernon Lee. The IVLS also has a Facebook and Twitter account.
