Melville and the Material Text

This seminar offers a unique chance to carefully read a classic of American literature while exploring how to apply digital approaches to studying novels. The seminar series will feature close readings and discussions of Melville, it will also explore the varying digital approaches, from quantitative to qualitative analyses to a demonstration of a digital archive of Melville’s notes in his books. Participants will also get the opportunity to use the Melville Electronic Library’s digital edition of Moby-Dick, which juxtaposes the American and British editions, in effect showing Melville’s revisions after he submitted the book to his American publisher––and how his British publisher changed parts of the book without his permission.
