What’s the difference between vellum and parchment, how are feathers made into quills, how were the letters written, what pigments were used in manuscripts and how, what types of gold illuminated the pages? All this and more will be explored in a day using manuscript examples and demonstrations to focus on the workings of the mediæval scribe and illuminator.

Patricia Lovett is a professional calligrapher and illuminator and works from her studio at Kent. She has written a number of books on calligraphy and illumination, and teaches and lectures all over the world.

Patricia was awarded an MBE in 2013 for services to heritage craft and calligraphy.
